Company History
Vigor Industrial, along with its wholly owned subsidiaries, is headquartered on Swan Island in Portland, Oregon. The company has regional locations which span the West Coast.
Our headquarters location was first developed as a shipyard in 1942 by Henry Kaiser, to build T-2 tankers for the Allied effort during World War II. Swan Island was one of three Kaiser yards constructed in the Portland area, employing tens of thousands of skilled men and women in shipbuilding. After the War, the Port of Portland operated the facility as a public ship repair yard for nearly 50 years. Many of our employees come from multi-generational ship repair families who have worked at the Portland facility since World War II.
In 1995, a subsidiary company of Vigor Industrial took over as the sole operator of the shipyard under a lease with the Port of Portland. Then, in 2000 Vigor Industrial purchased the shipyard from the Port of Portland. Under private ownership, the facility has expanded beyond ship repair to encompass a variety of industrial pursuits.
The original core of our business model was developed around ship repair. Each Vigor Industrial ship repair company has a strong individual history of successful projects ranging from large tankers, to cruise ships, to government vessels.
As exemplified by the industrial arm of the company, innovation is a key component of Vigor Industrial’s approach to business. Owning a riverfront industrial facility with strong infrastructure assets allowed us to diversify beyond ship repair. We provide industrial services, such as heavy lift and load, for small business customers who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford the facility overhead costs. Vigor Industrial owns multiple industrial sub-companies that specialize in fields as diverse as machining, surface preparation, and water treatment.
